In 1989, teen pregnancy in Arkansas had reached an all-time high, a rate of about 80 births per 1,000 teenage girls, just slightly ahead of Mississippi, thank God. Small-town and rural school districts turned out to have greater rates in Arkansas, and one of them, Lincoln School District, made a change in its health policy, providing birth-control alternatives to students who sought that option. Not surprisingly, the teen birth rate in Lincoln dropped quickly.
Teen pregnancy is not a hilarious subject, but the Gridiron writers in 1989 believed the issue could be presented from the girls’ point of view, adding pathos to the humor. We hope this presents their plight with empathy.
